Paul CÉZANNE
《Bathers at Rest》
c. 1875-77 Ink and watercolor on paper
Bathers were a subject into which Cézanne put his heart and soul throughout his life. In the quest he engaged in until his death, he found bathers to be his perfect subject and produced over 200 oils, watercolors, and sketches of bathers. His personal starting point was a memory of swimming in the Arc river in Aix with Zola and others in middle school. Here he has applied watercolors roughly to swiftly drawn ink lines. The space has a sense of depth, and we can sense the artist ’s commitment to thoughtfully arranging the figures. This work reached Japan in 1921.
