Constantin BRANCUSI

《The Kiss》

1907-10  Plaster

Brancusi studied sculpture at the Bucharest School of Fine Arts, then moved to Paris in 1904 and set off on his journey as a sculptor. After producing figurative sculptures of the human figure showing the influence of Rodin, he turned to directly carving in wood and stone, which he had enjoyed since his youth in Romania, tending to simplified, crude forms. This work from that early period is a version in plaster based on directly carving in stone. It retains the wildness of cutting out of a lump of stone in expressing the connection between man and woman that is its subject in a serene and concise form.
