Henri MATISSE

《Collioure》

1905  Oil on cardboard

In 1905, Matisse and his friend the artist Andre Derain spent May through September in Collioure, a fishing village in southern France. There Matisse made a significant change in his style, from pointillism to working in color fields. He boldly expressed the landscape in this painting, using colors freely. In the center, in green, is a church. The pale green across the front is the seashore, and the pink on the right is yachts bobbing in the water. At the Salon d’Automne that year, Matisse and other young artists were dubbed “fauves” (“wild animals”) for their extensive use of primary colors and aggressive execution, and the name Fauvism was born.
