拡大《Striped Jacket》

Henri MATISSE

《Striped Jacket》

1914  Oil on canvas

The model is the artist’s eldest daughter, Marguerite, then twenty. To conceal the scar of the tracheotomy she received as a child, she has a ribbon with a pendant around her neck. Matisse, leaving the white of his underpainting while applying bright colors in a variety of types of brushwork, reminding us of his Fauvist period, lightly painting a lovely portrait of a woman. The checked hat and the striped jacket that provided the title of this painting appear unified in color and line, the outcome of Matisse’s then deepening quest for plastic expression.
