《Dune》
1909 Oil and pencil on cardboard
Mondrian, deeply interested in theosophy, advocated his thinking on nature and art as neoplasticism; through ascetic, introspective paintings reduced to geometric elements, he sought a new form of abstraction. This painting is one of a series Mondrian painted of the dunes while in Domburg, a village in the southwest of the Netherlands. At that period, he was focusing on dunes, the sea, and buildings as his subjects and studying the results. In this painting, Mondrian has stratified the space, from land to sky, and experimented with combinations of shapes and density of brushstrokes and colors.
