ZAO Wou-ki
《07.06.85》
1985 Oil on canvas
Zao studied painting in China before moving to Paris in 1948. There he became involved in Lyrical Abstraction and found his own terrain in which an East Asian worldview lives. The titles of his works indicate their completion dates; his paintings defy definition in words. In this painting, the blue color plane, rising like an angry wave, in the thickness and shades of the colors, and, below it, the current flowing horizontally, in white, show a tension-filled balance of power. Boldly grasping the dynamism that shapes nature and expressing the workings of his emotions in his free brushwork: we see the fascination of Zao’s mature period work.
