《Detached Segment from the Battle at Rokuhara Scroll of the Tale of the Heiji Rebellion》

Kamakura period, 13th century  Color on paper

The Tale of the Heiji Rebellion Picture Scrolls were a set of ten scrolls. Today, only the Night Attack on Sanjo Palace (Museum of Fine Art, Boston), the Shinzei (Seikado Bunka Art Museum), and the Removal of Imperial Family to Rokuhara (Tokyo National Museum) scrolls, plus detached segments of the Battle at Rokuhara scroll, of which this work is one, survive. Until 1943, it was kept in an album with thirteen other segments of that scroll. The subject is the attack by Minamoto no Yoshihira’s forces on Taira no Kiyomori’s Rokuhara mansion. The enthralling composition gives a simplified close-up view of one of Kiyomori’s men engaging the attackers.
