Suffering from visual and auditory hallucinations from childhood, Kusama Yayoi began drawing on paper to ease them. That experience then became the inspiration for her creative activity. Visiting the United States in 1957, she began experiment with an avant-garde style. Her 1959 solo exhibition at the Brata Gallery in New York attracted great interest for works with fine arcs in white pigment over the entire canvas. These paintings’ similarity to nets suggested the title Infinity Net. This painting, with red mesh on a white ground, is an extension of those works. The result is a tense picture plane, precise yet dynamic.
