DOMOTO Hisao
《Tension of Spirit》
1958 Oil on canvas
Born into a family that produced many artists, Domoto Hisao first traveled in Europe, with his uncle, the Nihonga painter Insho, in 1952. He then shifted from Nihonga to oil painting. In 1955, at the age of twenty-seven, he went to Paris and threw himself into the rising Art Informel movement. Of the intense surges of abstract styles emerging simultaneously throughout the world after World War II, Art Informal was the leading edge. This work is ideal for understanding Domoto’s style in this period. Motions arise from the inside and circle the picture plane, generating a chaotic space erasing lines between interior and exterior, front and back.
