Henri FANTIN-LATOUR
《Still Life (Flowers, Fruits, Wineglass, and Tea Cup)》
1865 Oil on canvas
While stimulated by the tide of Realism developing from Courbet on, Fantin-Latour was influenced by the Romanticism of Delacroix to create paintings with a whimsical or fantastic quality. He also painted still lifes throughout his career. His models included seventeenth-century Dutch paintings and work by Chardin, an eighteenth-century French painter. In this work, a vase filled with flowers of various colors, a pomegranate, a lemon, a filled wine glass, an empty teacup, and a spoon are lined up neatly on the tabletop. His effective use of white makes the colors of the flowers and fruit stand out.
