拡大《Li Bo Gazing at the Waterfall》

OGATA Korin

《Li Bo Gazing at the Waterfall》

Edo period, 18th century  Sumi and light color on silk

Gazing on the waterfall at Mount Lushan,
Purple mists rise from Incense Burner Peak in the sunlight; Far away, the waterfall seems to hang above the stream. The torrent plunges straight down three thousand feet. Could it be falling from the highest point in the Milky Way?
This poem by Tang Chinese poet Li Bo inspired a popular painting theme in Japan: Li Bo gazing at a waterfall and composing a poem. The strong drapery-like strokes depicting the poet and the delicate whiskers suggesting a breeze rising from Incense Stone Mountain speak of Korin’s mastery of painting techniques. On lower left are the “Seisei Korin” signature and “Masatoki” seal. The composition is concise and thoughtful in this fine work from Korin’s late period.
