《Mt. Fuji and Mt. Tsukuba》

Edo period, 19th century  Color and gold-leaf on paper

In the Edo period, Mount Fuji and Mount Tsukuba become symbols of Edo, the eastern capital, and frequent themes in literature and art. Here Mount Fuji, gleaming white, covered with snow, is viewed from the Fujigawa river, as the breakwaters offshore and the pine woods tell us. Mount Tsukuba’s two peaks, male and female, are depicted from the Tonegawa river and Kasumigarua side.
The “Kaikai Kiitsu” signature and “Tei Hakushi” seal are those of Suzuki Kiitsu, whose skills Sakai Hoitsu trusted. Since Kiitsu adopted the “Kaikai” name at his master’s death, he created this work in his for ties, when he revealing his unique sensibility.
