《Scene from the Tale of the Hogen-Heiji Battles》

Edo period, 17th century  Color on paper

The subjects of these six fan paintings are two war narratives, The Tale of Hogen and The Tale of the Heiji. Originally fifteen fan paintings were attached to a single eight-fold screen; they were separated after around 1945. They lack a signature or seal, but their stylistic similarity to Painted Fans Mounted on a Screen (Museum of the Imperial Collection) suggests they are by Sotatsu or his studio. Little is known about Sotatsu except that he had a painting shop, the Tawaraya, that was highly regarded for its fan and narrative paintings, which became its brand, according to contemporary documents.
