Seeking new developments in his work, Fujita Tsuguharu traveled to Latin America in 1931. As he toured Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, and Peru, his style changed, gaining vivid colors and realistic depiction. From the inscription on the lower right, we know that he painted this work in 1932, in Rio de Janeiro, but it lacks the vivid palette characteristic of that period. Instead, he used the techniques of his École de Paris period, the white ground and delicate lines, to depict a woman and cat, a motif that was his forte.
