The subject is a café on Boulevard de Port-Royal, near Saeki Yuzo’s atelier. The inscription reading ”UZO SAHEKI/ A PARIS/ NOV 27/ HOTEL DU MARCHE” on the upper right tells us he painted this work in November, 1927, during his second time in France. The leaping black lettering on the walls re recomposed decoratively in the painting, adding motion to the picture plane. This painting was shown after Saeki’s death in a special display at the 1930 Society exhibition in 1929.
