Paul SIGNAC

《Port of Concarneau》

1925  Oil on canvas

Concarneau is a seaport in Brittany, in western France. In the summer of 1891, Signac set out from Concarneau in his beloved sailboat for Saint-Tropez, on the Côte d’Azur. He later produced a travel diary, in watercolors, of the French ports he visited. Revisiting Concarneau in 1925, he produced oil paintings, including this one. Signac, who built Neo-Impressionism with Seurat, later shifted from working in pointillist dots of color to brushstrokes producing mosaic-like squares. In this work, he has created a decorative effect in pale colors: blue, pink, orange, and yellow.
