Sisley and Renoir shared an atelier in Paris, star ting in July, 1865. The next February, they painted while staying with their friend Jules Le Coeur, in the village of Marlotte. This painting depicts some of the villagers. Stone houses line the street. The season is late autumn. The three women in the center are going to the woods to collect firewood to burn during the winter. While the color scheme is dark, Sisley has used light and dark contrasts effectively, and the foreground, bathed in sunlight, is bright. With this painting, Sisley had his work accepted for the Salon for the first time, in 1866.
