Edgar DEGAS
《After the Bath》
c. 1900 Pastel on paper
Degas often worked in pastels in depicting nude women bathing indoors, as well as dancers. In many of these works, Degas used a peeking-through-a-keyhole perspective to capture the natural figure of the nude absorbed in her daily activities. This pastel of a woman resting on the edge of her bathtub is drawn at an angle from the rear, a composition he experimented with in the latter half of 1880s and around 1900. In a series of sorts, Degas used the same study, making changes in the composition and the figure’s bearing. In this work, the soft harmonies of gray, yellow, and green accent the strong lines used to express the mass of the body.
