The Collection of Thirty-Six Poets was created for the sixtieth birthday of retired emperor Shirakawa, in March, 1112. This work is a segment of the Iseshu from the Honganjibon copy; the original has not survived. When the pages of the Tsurayukishu and Iseshu volumes were unbound and sold in 1929, they were named the “Ishiyama-gire,” Ishiyama being a place name associated with Honganji. Each page is gorgeously decorated, with torn sheets of colored paper pasted to it and birds and maple leaves painted in silver pigment. The elegant calligraphy is by aristocrats who were skilled calligraphers.
