《Bank of the Seine》

1927  Oil on canvas

Oka Shikanosuke headed for Paris after graduating from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, arriving in 1925 and returning fourteen years later, at the outbreak of World War II. He interacted with Fujita Tsuguharu and acquired a Western creative spirit from Henri Rousseau and Georges Seurat and so on. He established a method of painting carefully constructed landscapes little by little, using a thinly painted, delicate touch. This landscape is an early example of that style. Rousseau’s influence is visible in the flat buildings serving as a backdrop and the people relaxing on the riverside. The river plus bridge subject is one that Oka treasured until the end of his life.
