《Newly Selected Six Immortal Poets and Flowers and Plants of the Four Seasons》
Edo period, 19th century Color and gold-leaf on paper
The flowers and plants are placed so that the seasons unfold from right to left; the squares of colored paper are pasted on the screen in response to their movement. The flowers include unusual species such as fritillary and yarrow; the papers contain poems and portraits of the newly selected six immortal poets, including Fujiwara no Yoshitsune and Fujiwara no Sadaie. The painting is signed “Uge Hoitsu” at the left edge with the “Bunsen” and “Hisago” seals of Sakai Hoitsu, who spread the Rimpa style in Edo. This work is thought to date from after 1817, when Hoitsu named his residence the Ugean.
