ASAI Chu
《Woman Sewing》
1902 Oil on canvas
A woman, seated on a chair, is looking down towards her hands as she concentrates on her sewing. The colors of the stripes on her shawl glow beautifully against the pale green background. We know from the note on the lower right of the painting that it was created in March, 1902, while Asai Chu was in Paris after his final visit to Grez. His model is said to have been the wife of the concierge at his lodgings in Paris. The bright sense of color and the light, free brushwork are characteristic of his style while in Europe. This painting of a human figure is, however, a rarity among his European work, in which landscape paintings dominate.
