About this exhibition
The Artizon Museum has, since our opening, been holding Jam Sessions, collaborations between works from the Ishibashi Foundation Collection and contemporary artists. For the sixth Jam Session exhibition, we have invited Yamashiro Chikako and Shiga Lieko to take part. Yamashiro depicts, at times mingled with humor, the complex and distorted situation of her native place, Okinawa, including the contradictions and oppression modern and contemporary Japan generates, the Battle of Okinawa, and the U.S. military bases concentrated there. Shiga has made Miyagi prefecture her base since 2008; she sheds light on Tohoku Earthquake and recovery from it and the imbalanced dynamics between the center and the periphery that preceded that disaster and the effects on people’s lives. Through new works by both artists, we introduce the profound approach with which they address complex and troubling preexisting realities and the nature of their creativity and artistic techniques, which resonate with works from the collection.
